FAQ

1 What affects my internet speed?

Several factors can slow your internet speed:

  1. Use of WiFi instead of a wired connection
  2. Components within your computer, such as processor speed, amount of available memory, operating system, and computer configuration
  3. The number of applications that are running at the same time
  4. The number of computers or other devices that share your internet connection
  5. The quality and condition of the wiring that connects your computer(s) to the Ziply Fiber network
  6. Unusual events like a network outage and equipment failure may also reduce speed temporarily

2 How do I test my Ziply Fiber internet speed?

For the most accurate results, we recommend using the desktop version of the Speedtest application with a wired connection.

Before starting the test, be sure to:

  1. Connect your computer directly to your router using an ethernet cable.
  2. Disconnect from any VPNs.
  3. Make sure no other device is connected to your internet during the test.
  4. Avoid using video or music streaming apps during the test.

Testing speeds over WiFI or with web browsers may provide inaccurate results.

3 What are the device specifications for testing Fiber speeds?

In general, a device should meet these minimum specifications to perform well on a Ziply Fiber connection.

Windows

  • Windows 7 or higher
  • 1.2 GHz Processor
  • 1 GB RAM
  • 100Mbps Ethernet Card

Mac

  • OSX 10.3.9 or higher
  • 2 GHz Processor
  • 2 GB RAM
  • 100Mbps Ethernet Card

To get the most out of a speed test, and your use of the Fiber network, here are the recommended device specifications for Fiber connections:

Windows

  • 64-bit Windows 10 Pro
  • Intel Core i7 CPU @ 2.5GHZ or higher
  • 16 GB RAM
  • Gigabit Ethernet connection or USB3 or gigabit ethernet adapter

Mac

  • OSX 10.12
  • Intel Core i7 CPU @ 2.5GHZ or higher
  • 16 GB RAM
  • Gigabit Ethernet connection or Thunderbolt gigabit ethernet adapter

4 WiFi is wireless. What factors can affect that signal?

Other factors may cause interference and affect the speed of your WiFi connection, including:

  • Distance from the router
  • Physical buildings such as walls and floors
  • Kitchen equipment (microwave ovens, refrigerators, etc.)
  • Other home gadgets like garage door openers, cordless phones, baby monitors
  • Other WiFi networks in the vicinity
  • Any 802.11b device on the network (it is advised you remove this device from the network)

Identifying the specific interference is difficult and sometimes impossible. To get the best possible WiFi signal, place the router in the location where you use WiFi most, and away from physical obstructions and other devices that may interfere with the WiFi signal. During times when you need the fastest connection possible, use a wired connection to the router.
